Inspired by a large series of Kuba textiles and the Tom Wesselmann print ‘Still life with Liz’, this auction was aptly named ‘Patchwork’. Brief report below with hammer prices (excluding commission). All results can be found here<\/a>.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row equal_height=”yes” content_placement=”top” css=”.vc_custom_1680005381165{margin-top: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;}” el_class=”justify”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/6″][vc_column_text]Two different collections deserved special mention: the collection sold in the bankruptcy of a private equity firm and part of the Jan Hoet archives (following the two sales we were already privileged to organise in 2021 and 2022). The first collection was sold by order of the curators Mr. S. Boeynaems, Mr. Ch. Hendrickx and Mr. N. Taeymans, appointed over the bankruptcy NV Merit Capital and included works by Rinus Van De Velde (lot 1215, res. : \u20ac 20000), Folkert de Jong (lot 1186, res.: \u20ac 10000 ), Luc Tuymans (lot 1183, res.: \u20ac 6500), Cristof Yvor\u00e9 (lot 1180, res.: \u20ac 17000) and Jan Cobbaert (lot 1175, res.: \u20ac 6000). Then again, from the Hoet archive, a unique photolitho by Jan Vercruysse (lot 1540, res.: \u20ac 8500) was sold alongside works by Thierry De Cordier (lots 1621, 1622, \u20ac 6000 and \u20ac 6500 respectively). There was also healthy interest in Joseph Beuys (lot 1585, res.: \u20ac 6500), Luigi Ontani (lot 1628, res.: \u20ac 5600) and Michael B\u00fcthe (lot 1619, res.: \u20ac 4500).[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Finally, from an Antwerp private collection, a bronze ‘Multiplication des poissons’ by Jean-Michel Folon passed under the hammer almost doubling its estimate (lot 1174, res.: \u20ac58000) and the impressive Tom Wesselmann silkscreen, ‘Still life with Liz’ went away at the lower end of the estimate (lot 1151, res.: \u20ac20000).<\/p>\n

Classical paintings were not lacking either, but most international interest went to classical antiques: a man-sized Mercury figure by Van den Kerckhove (lot 273) commanded \u20ac9500, a three-piece Louis XVI fireplace garniture changed hands for \u20ac11000 (lot 121) and a Raingo Brothers garniture for \u20ac12000 (lot 135).[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/6″][vc_single_image image=”10187″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes”][vc_single_image image=”10183″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row equal_height=”yes” content_placement=”top” css=”.vc_custom_1680005381165{margin-top: 0px !important;border-top-width: 0px !important;}” el_class=”justify”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”4\/6″][vc_single_image image=”10190″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text]However, a still life with Renaissance goblet by the Romanticist Jean-Baptiste Robie remained unsold, and for other works by Emmanuel Noterman, Eugene Siberdt and Max Carlier, among others, there was a stoic attitude.<\/p>\n

Remarkable in the Timed Online auctions (these are auctions running parallel to our Live auctions since 2013, which can be bid for without an auctioneer in a so-called ‘silent sale’) were a French porcelain ‘Bru Jeune’ doll from the Roelants collection (lot 5039), which fetched no less than \u20ac 10000 and a mask from the Ivory Coast (lot 5591) for which one bidder offered \u20ac 9500.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_class=”justify”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/6″][vc_single_image image=”10193″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/6″][vc_single_image image=”10196″ img_size=”full” add_caption=”yes”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row el_class=”justify”][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]As usual, the Spring was rounded off with a Live Auction Works on Paper, which included Frans Masereel’s “L’\u00e9l\u00e9phant” (lot 1021) which stood out (res.: \u20ac2000). From the same consignor, two drawings by Jan Fabre (lots 1086, 1087, res.: \u20ac2000 each) and a matter painting by Bram Bogart (lot 1088, res.: \u20ac4200) also came under the hammer.
