FAQ

GENERAL

How does the Live Online Auction differ from a normal auction?

In these changing Covid-19 conditions that also affect the art trade, it is important to give priority to the safety of both customers and our staff. That is why the house does not organize an ordinary auction with public in May, but an ‘auction in an empty room’.

This means that the auctioneer will auction without a live audience. The auction will be streamed live from the auction room. You can bid from behind the computer, tablet or smartphone and via absentee bid/ pre-bid or by telephone. However, there are still several ways to bid, which you can find hier.

BEFORE the auction

The expo is only by appointment, how can I assess the quality of a piece?

There are several additional tools that can promote the assessment of a piece:

  1. there are more photos available
  2. the resolution of the photos has doubled and you can zoom in extra on the piece
  3. you can request additional photos by mail (info@bernaerts.be)/ chat or telephone (+32 3 248 1921)
  4. you can request a condition report, in which the condition of the object is described in detail
  5. you can find videos online on our site for certain pieces and also on social media
  6. you can chatd irectly with our experts where you can ask questions about a specific item or about the auction itself

How do I request a condition report?

A condition report describes the material condition of the artwork. This can be a restoration, damage, displacement, discoloration, a (later) signature, the back of the canvas or the bottom of an object, any imperfections, etc. These data are systematically and clearly recorded and supplemented with photographic (detail) recordings.

You can request such a report by mail (info@bernaerts.be), via the chat function on our site or by telephone (03 248 19 21). Be sure to include the lot number and your contact details.

Do I have to register in advance to bid?

Yes. If you want to bid online, you must register at least 5 hours before the start of the auction. Take into account the waiting time until acceptance of your registration.
For auction from Monday June 22 until June 22 at 9am
For auction from Thuesday June 23: until June 23 at 9am
For auction from Wednesday June 24: until June 24 9am

You can register on the online platform itself. Here you will find the direct links Invaluable , Auction Mobility of Droutonline.
Please note, from the moment you have received your login, you still have to register effectively to be able to bid.

Am I obliged to buy after registration?

No, you can follow the auction remotely without obligation.

Do I need an account with Bernaerts to be able to bid?

Yes, but only to make bids in advance, not for the live online auction. The commission is 22%. You can create an account with Bernaerts here. Once registered, you will be kept informed of all our upcoming auctions and peripheral activities (concerts, events, exhibitions) and you will have access to the condition reports.

To be able to bid live online, you must create an account through one of these three platforms: Invaluable , Auction Mobility of Droutonline. The commission here is 28%.

Do I have to follow the full auction to be able to bid?

That's not necessary. Based on the lot number, you can estimate when your lot will be auctioned. The auctioneer auctions 80 to 100 lots per hour. You can also always look up online where we are somewhere in the auction.

What do I have to do before the auction to be able to bid?

There are different deadlines for the 3 different bidding methods:

1) Live Bidding' via 3 platforms: Invaluable , Auction Mobility of Droutonline.
For this you need to register at least 5 hours before the start of the auction on one of the three platforms in order to bid online from behind your screen during the auction. Take into account the waiting time before accepting your registration.

2) In writing via the online 'purchase orders’ form'

To do this, you must email the online 'purchase orders' form no later than 12 hours before the auction to info@bernaerts.be.

You can also bid in writing by submitting a "pre-bid" online. For this you need to register in advance on one of the three online platforms. After acceptance (which may take a while), enter your maximum bid next to the ticket. To issue a prebid you need to register at least 5 hours in advance.

3) By telephone using the 'telephone bidding' form '
To do this, you must complete the online 'telephone bidding' form ' sent to info@bernaerts.beno later than 12 hours before the auction.

More detailed information about "how to buy" can be found here.

What are the conditions for bidding on the auction?

Our auction conditions for the buyer can be found here.
The bottom line is that the auction price must be increased by the commission:

22% for telephone and absentee bids, 28% for live bids and prebids via one of the three platforms Invaluable , Auction Mobility of Droutonline, and that the lots must be paid no later than five working days after the close of the last auction day.

DURING the auction:

How does bidding at an auction work?

The auctioneer leads the auction under the supervision of a bailiff. The bailiff represents the Belgian State and ensures that every action is in accordance with the law.

The auctioneer starts the bids with a basic amount that he deems reasonable for a particular lot or with an amount by which he is bound and increases this each time a higher bid is made. Usually, a bid increases the previous bid by approximately 10 to 20%, depending on the amount.
To illustrate: From 10, 20, 30; from 100, 120, 130, ... from 200, 220, 240, ... from 400, 450, 500; from 1000, 1100, 1200,…; from 2000, 2200, 2400, ...; from 5000, 5500, 6000, ...; from 10,000, 11,000, 12,000, ...; from 20,000, 22,000, 24,000, ... etc. The auctioneer can deviate exceptionally from this. He determines the final price increase.

The ultimate buyer is the one who makes the last bid.

Note that with every bid you pay a commission on top of the hammer price, depending on the way you bid. For telephone bids and absentee bids or purchase orders, the commission is 22%. The commission for the online live bids and the prebids via one of the three platforms is 28%.

Can I follow the auction without bidding?

This can be done through our site. Under the heading "auctions" click on enkel online + live bidding’. You can follow the auction live via the 'Watch Only' function. Please note, in this mode you cannot bid just watch. The auction will also be streamed via Facebook Live. Fascinating.

3) By telephone using the 'telephone bidding' form '

More detailed information about "how to buy" can be found here.

Can I bid without following the auction live?

This can be done via prebid or via an absentee bid or purchase order.
You can make a maximum bid in advance. You have two options for this:

1. Via an absentee bid: you will find the online ‘absentee bid form’ here . You send this completed 12 hours before the auction to info@bernaerts.be and we offer for you. Using this form, the auctioneer tries to acquire your ticket at the best possible price.

Example: you indicate via the purchase order to place a bid for a specific item up to a maximum of € 1,000; the item was estimated at € 500/750; the auctioneer starts with a basic amount of € 400, from then on the bidding starts. The auctioneer offers up to your maximum bid (€ 1,000). If the bidding remains in the room at € 650, you will acquire the piece for the next bid (€ 700). If the item is allocated to € 1,100, the piece is not for you.
The commission for these written bids is 22%.

  1. Via a prebid: This can be done via an online platform (Invaluable , Auction Mobility of Droutonline). You must register for this no later than 5 hours before the start of the auction. Please note, this may take some time. After approval, go to the auction on the relevant platform and in addition to the lottery on which you want to bid, you can place a prebid (leave bid) by clicking on it. This is the maximum amount you want to spend on this artwork.
This prebid is provided by our clerks.

Example: you indicate via the site that you are bidding for a specific piece up to a maximum of € 1,000; the item was estimated at € 500/750; the auctioneer starts with a basic amount of € 400, from then on the bidding starts. The clerk offers you up to your maximum bid (€ 1,000). If the bidding remains in the hall at € 650, you will acquire the piece for the next bid (€ 700). If the item is allocated to € 1,100, the piece is not for you.
The commission for these prebids online is 28%

How can I make a bid by phone?

You email an completed online 'telephone bidding' form’ to info@bernaerts.be, at the latest 12 hours before the start of the auction.
One of our employees will call you on a few lots for the lot number you are interested in. If the lot in question is sold, you can indicate whether you want to go with the bid or not.
For safety, we also offer you the option of giving us a "safety bid" in advance. This is a maximum bid that we can use in case we cannot reach you by phone during the auction.

It is important that the auction house can in no way be held liable for inaccessibility, disconnection of the network or any technical problem during the auction of an item indicated by you. It is a service that the house provides.

The commission for telephone bids is 22%.

What does it take to make a written offer?

You can make a written offer in 2 ways:

1. Via an absentee bid: for this you must (at the latest 12 hours before the start of the auction) complete the online ‘absentee bid form' sent to info@bernaerts.be and we will offer for you. Using this form, the auctioneer tries to acquire your ticket at the best possible price. The commission for these written bids is 22%.

  1. Via a prebid: This can be done via an online platform (Invaluable , Auction Mobility of Droutonline). For this you need to register no later than 5 hours before the start of the auction. Please note, this may take some time. After approval, you can go to the auction on the relevant platform and in addition to the lot you want to bid on, you can place a prebid (leave bid) by clicking on it. This is the maximum amount you want to spend on this artwork. This prebid is provided by our clerks. The commission for these prebids online is 28%
What is the difference between a buy order and a prebid?

In both cases it is about the maximum amount you want to spend on a particular work of art. However, it differs in the way you communicate this.

For a purchase order you must enter this amount on the ‘absentee bid form' and send it to info@bernaerts.be. The auctioneer will try to buy your artwork for you at the best possible price. The commission / commission of 22% applies.
For a pre-bid you must (after registration) enter this amount online in addition to the ticket you want to buy. The clerk who controls this platform during the auction will look after this for you. The commission is 28%.

For completeness, we also mention the safety bid. This is again about the maximum bid that you want to spend on a particular lot. You can fill this in (if desired) on the 'telephone bids' form'. We can then use this "safety offer" in case we cannot reach you by telephone during the auction.

Can I place a prebid on any online platform?

You can, but take into account the waiting time for acceptance / registration.

What is the difference between an "online only auction" and a "live online auction"?

An Online only auction or Timed online auction or also the Aftersale is an auction without an auctioneer. All artworks are only offered online by auction with an end date on which the bidding is closed. By filling in your maximum bid online, the system will automatically bid against other competitors. You will be kept informed of the progress of the bidding process via the website and via email. The commission here is 30%.

A Live online auction is an auction without an audience in the auction room. Our upcoming Stay-in auction from May 5-6-7 will be organized this way. This means that the auctioneer will auction without a live audience. The auction will be streamed live from the auction room. You can only bid online, via absentee bid/ prebid or by telephone. Where else can be bid from the hall, the doors of the auction room for this auction will remain closed to the public.
However, there are still several ways to bid, which you can find here.

What are the costs if I bid on the auction?

The extra commission (or premium) you have to pay per lot depends on how you make your bid:

22% on the allotment price in the room, by telephone or by purchase order on bernaerts.eu
or 28% on the allotment price via webcast or via purchase order via the auction platforms Invaluable, Auction Mobility or Drouotonline or 30% on the allotment price via the timed online sale, so-called "Silent Sale" or "After Sale" all including VAT.

In addition, each purchase gives rise to the collection of administration costs of € 2 plus any resale right (4%) on an original work of art, allocated from € 2,000.

How do I know if an artwork has been assigned to me?

During the live online auction you will receive the notification from the auctioneer and the auction platform that you were the successful bidder.
After the auction you will receive a confirmation email with an overview of the lottery tickets you have purchased.

Can other people see online that I am bidding?

No, for the outside world you offer completely anonymously.

What about privacy?

We follow the GDPR regulations and handle your personal data with the utmost care.

What if I have problems bidding during the auction?

During the auction there is a permanent helpdesk available on our site. We are available by phone and email.

AFTER the auction:

What is an aftersale?

An Aftersale is an Online only auction or Timed online auction. This auction comes online the day after the live auction and ends the next monday at noon. Here (with permission of the contributors) the unsold pieces of the Stay-in auction are offered online. This auction takes place without an auctioneer. All lottery tickets are only sold online by auction with an end date on which the bidding is closed. By filling in your maximum bid online, the system will automatically bid against other competitors. You will be kept informed of the course of the bidding process via the website and by e-mail.
