Emi See – piano
Japanese-American pianist Emi See (*1997) works across a wide and demanding repertoire, specializing in the performance of new music. Her recent research explores time in post-tonal music, approaching it both as lived experience and as musical structure. In performance, she is drawn to moments of simultaneity—points where performer, listener, space, and sound align.
Emi See has performed at the November Music Festival (NL), the Düsseldorf Festival (DE), the Transit Festival for New Music (BE) and the Mixtur Festival (ES) and has been invited to work with ensembles such as the Spectra Ensemble (BE), SEM Ensemble (US) and Tempus Konnex (DE). She has had the opportunity to work with composers such as Bernhard Lang, Simon Steen-Andersen and Shiori Usui as well as many young composers.
She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Glasgow with Aaron Shorr and Sinae Lee at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland with First Degree Honors. After completing her master’s degree and Postgraduate Soloist degree with “highest distinction” at the Royal Conservatoire in Ghent with Daan Vandewalle, she is studying Neue Musik with Barbara Maurer and Lorenzo Soules at the Folkwang University of the Arts.
She has studied and attended master classes with pianists such as Nicolas Hodges, Hie-Yon Choi, Ursula Oppens, Klaus Steffes-Holländer, Ralph van Raat, Stefan Wirth, Peter Takacs, Daniel Shapiro, and Thomas Rosenkranz and has participated in the Darmstadt Ferienkurse, Ensemble-Akademie with ensemble recherche and at the Akademie für Zeitgenössische Musik in Lucerne (CH).
Since 2025, she is the co-founder and pianist of Duo Whittern/See (a bassoon piano duo with Ronan Whittern) and trio S!GNALE (an Essen-based trio with cellist Jungin Kim and clarinetist Sophie Kockler).
Originally from California, she currently lives and works in Essen, Germany.
