8 – 9 October Live auction: Classic vs. Modern (results)
From the contents of the ‘LO&S’ mansion, located Oudaan 20, it were chandeliers and (Second) Empire pieces that topped the charts. A pair of candelabras made in the style of Thomire (lot 70) sold for example at €5600, a pair in the style of François Remond in turn (lot 44) went away at €8000 and a pair in gilt bronze and ‘rouge griotte’ marble changed hands for €4400 (lot 56).
For a Louis XIV dome chandelier (lot 190) one had €7000 on offer, the imposing basket-shaped chandelier that for decades left its mark on the hall of the ditto city palace (lot 9) went away at €9500 and even better did the (admittedly rare) co-occurring pair of ‘sac-à-perles’ that also ended up above the estimate (lot 66, res.: €13500). A bronze by Jef Lambeaux, ‘La Volupté’ (lot 195) went for €7000 and a bronze sculpture by Prosper d’Epinay, ‘Paul et Virginie’, logically went to an enthusiast on an island in the Indian Ocean (lot 198, res: €3400).
At the second session, that of Immoroc in bankruptcy, bids were placed on a reissue of Piranesi’s ‘Carceri d’invenzione’ (lot 268, res.: € 6000), on a woodcut by Albrecht Dürer (lot 521, res.: € 2200) or still on recent graphic work by Alechinsky (lot 281, res.: € 5200) and Poliakoff ( lot 276, res.: € 4800). Some Old Master paintings also did score highly. For example, a Renaissance church interior by François de Nomé sold for a sevenfold of her estimate (lot 265, est.: €3500/4500, res.: €27000) and canvases by Karel van Mander (lot 256) went for €6000 and Gillis (or Frederick) Van Valckenborgh (lot 257) €7000. A canvas by Maurice Wyckaert (lot 286) from the same collection fetched the round €10000, design furniture was more in demand than ever (with e.g. the sets of six Eames-EA107 armchairs, each good for €7000, lots 333 and 334) and the ‘Hora est nos de somno surgere’ canvas by the inimitable Jef Verheyen (lot 316) did what it was supposed to do, i.e. sell at the upper end of the estimate (lot 316, res.: €60000).
