Lot 125. Jos De Decker. 'Tweeling', 1970 (sculpture 1 of 2). Res.: € 14000

The interest in almost all pieces from this admittedly small but diverse season opener (90% sold) proved to be significant. A brief report with hammer prices (excl. commission).

One of the surprises was the €17,000 bid for an anonymous, presumably South American 1742 dated “Santa Ana”, estimated around €1,000 (lot 14). A work by Antoine Mortier, “A ma mère” (brush in ink, 1961), also easily surpassed its highest estimate (lot 193, result: €28,000).
With a nod from Antwerp-based Jos Schippers, “Au Musée des Ancêtres”, a work from 1927 (lot 26, result: €6,000), a few classical paintings were offered, which sold surprisingly well.

On behalf of a Danish curator, paintings by Carl Bloch changed hands: “Landleven” (lot 39, from 1857) and “Laat de kinderen tot Mij komen” (lot 29) for €17,000 and €13,000 respectively. A “Dorpsfeest” by Klaas Molenaer reached €10,000 (lot 10). A view of Fredensborg by Monsted achieved €11,000, while a cityscape by Laurent Redig (lot 31) was auctioned for €6,000, against a landscape by Willem Koekkoek at €16,000 (lot 32).

Around 40 lots by well-known designers from the 1950s-70s were presented, with special attention to Hans J. Wegner, represented by the rare “Cube Bar” from 1956 (lot 161, result: €3,500) and the modular “Regalsystem RY 100” from 1955, manufactured by Rybo (lot 160, result: €2,400). The set of four chairs, which became iconic for their use during the 1960 Kennedy-Nixon debate, also sold smoothly (lot 158, result: €8,500).

Lot 39. Carl Bloch.
Lot 128. Maurice Sys. Winter at the Leie. Res.: € 15000
Lot 158. Hans J. Wegner. 'The chair', 1949. Res.: € 8500

Results from other designers: Nanna Ditzel (lot 172, result: €5,000), Ib Kofod-Larsen (lot 170, result: €2,600), Arne Norell (lot 178, result: €2,400), Paco Rabanne (lot 225, result: €9,500), Osvaldo Borsani (lot 194, result: €4,600).

Among the modern works, a beautifully painted “Winter aan de Leie” by Maurice Sys (lot 128, result: €15,000) and a similarly executed “Bloemenveld te Drongen” by the rarely seen Elvire Coisne (lot 132, result: €12,000) stood out. A pair of bronze sculptures by Jos De Decker fetched €14,000 (lot 125), while a striking aquatint measuring no less than 196 x 276 cm, “Door m’n Venster” by Fred Bervoets, was the cherry on top, selling for €14,000—twice its estimate.

Lot 193. Antoine Mortier.
