From a private Antwerp collection comes an intriguing collection of modern art. To begin with: there are two ’assemblages’ by Satish Gujral, an Indian born artist (°1925) who designed the Belgian embassy in New Dehli. The collector surely had a keen eye, for he also bought a iron plate sculpture by Victor Delfin, regarded as one of the most important 20th century Peruvian artists and an impressive drawing/ collage by the rightly famous Chinese artist Liu Kuo-Song, one of the first artists of his generation to combine abstract expressionism with classic Chinese landscape art. This work dates from 1972 and is estimated 30-40.000 euros.

Closer to home the collector found and bought one of the most impressive early paintings of Frits Van den Berghe, ’La Petite Eve’ (1905), est. 100-150.000 euros and a later one, ’De Boeteling’ (1930), coming from the legendary Le Centaure gallery, est. 60-80.000. The collection includes furthermore an impressive Jef Verheyen, ’Artkurus’, from 1972 and a breathtaking Vic Gentils assemblage, est. 10-15.000 euros. Two small tables by Ado Chale and one by Jules Wabbes will be presented in June on the Design Sale.

From another private Antwerp collection comes a quintessential work by the Korean artist Lee Ufan, ’From Point’, est. 150-180.000 euros. Much is said and written on the connection and friendships of the great Flemish author Hugo Claus with artists such as Roger Raveel, Pierre Alechinsky, Karel Appel ….. From his holdings comes one of the earliest portraits Raveel ever did of him, together with several other drawings and prints, with meaningful dedications. Other artists presented are: Dan Van Severen, Philippe Vandenberg, Brice Marden, Richard Tuttle, Paul Joostens ….. Most of these items will be presented in the ’Works on paper’ sale.

In that very sale we also bring works by Walter Swennen, Henk Visch, Werner Mannaers, Mario Merz, Jannis Kounellis, Luc Tuymans, selfportrait from the eighties, est. 15-18.000 euros, and a small but choice collection of artists’ books with magnificent copies of ’Dutch Details’ and ’Every building on the Sunset Strip’ by Ed Ruscha….. From the early 20th century we offer three very rare and sought after Ensor prints, an exquisite collection of drawings by Kurt Peiser, Eugeen Van Mieghem, Frans Masereel….. From the latter one we offer the original drawings and woodblocks he made for his version of ’L’Internationale’, est. 5-7000 euros
