On Wednesday morning, March 19th, the ’Works on Paper’ sale kicked off with some older prints, drawings and books of which Dodoens’ ’Kruydboeck’ (lot 1105) climbed up to 3600 euros, whereas a few on Antwerp by Delapointe (lot 1002) easily made 3200 euros. But the more the sale advanced, the more modern the material got. An illustrated Picasso edition (lot 1169) by Kovatchitch wrapped up the first session with a firm 3600 euros. After the lunch break we entered the world of Félicien Rops. The collection of 100 fine examples the artist’s engraving skills attracted much attention, both in the room and online as some sought after sheets left for Italy. Prices ranged between 200 and 2000 (’La mort qui danse’, lot 1252). The classic ones such as Kurt Peiser, Jules De Bruycker, Jakob Smits sold for solid prices. But the audience was this time waiting for the modern era to enter the arena: Ellsworth Kelly (lot 1423, 1100 euros), Paul Delvaux (lot 1352, 2800 euros), Stephan Vanfleteren (lot 1555, 1300 euros), Pierre Soulages (lot 1378, 1600 euros), Jacques Doucet (lot 1535, 2000 euros), Daniel Buren (lot 1365, 2200 euros), Bernar Venet (lot 1562, 5800 euros), Christo (lot 1558, 6200 euros), Picasso ( 7500 euros), Jozef Peeters (lot 1496, 17000 euros), Dan Van Severen (lot 1519, 3600 euros), Philippe Vandenberg (lot 1559, 3400 euros). But the star of the afternoon was James Ensor with his ’Le masque arraché, (lot 1463, 19000 euros).
