EN AVANT (ANTWERP)

To inaugurate the new space, Bernaerts is proud to present some high end avant garde paintings, drawings and sculptures. A very rare Felix De Boeck painting from 1922 will stand out, along with the plaster 'Fallen soldier' from Oscar Jespers, once in the possession of the poet Paul Van Ostaijen.

Most attention though will be shed on the Antwerp avant garde artist par excellence, Jozef Peeters. He'll be leading the pack with one of his only two known paintings on glass (est.: € 40000-50000), a great painting 'Polder' from 1919 and reworked in 1957 (est.  € 35000-50000) and a magnificent drawing from 1925 (est.: € 20000-25000).

Paul Joostens will also have is share with two exquisite drawings 'Barème théologique' and 'Sodome moderne' from 1924 and a lavishly illustrated letter to his once brother-in-arm Paul Van Ostaijen, dating from early 1921.

And no great sale without the ever present Floris Jespers, this time with a marvelous 'églomisé' painting, some great 'Congo' canvases and a very subtle marine.

ALSO BELGIAN

Equally fascinating are the two recently restituted works by Frits Van den Berghe, one canvas representing a couple and one drawing of a reclining figure.

The surrealist master Paul Delvaux has three highly distinctive drawings on this sale, depicting his famous nudes. One drawing even has a preliminary sketch on the reverse of the fabulous 'Les Grandes Sirènes' painting, now in the collection of the MET in New York.

It comes from the same private Antwerp collection from which we offer an equally fascinating painting 'Gouttes d'eau' (1976) by the South Korean artist Tschang-Yeul Kim, some Lucio Fontana editions, 'Concetto spaziale, natura' from 1963 and 'Concetto Spaziale, Teatrino' from 1966, edition of 12) and a magnificent Christo drawing 'Valley curtain (project for Colorado) from 1971.
