A City is not a Road

Artists for Ringland

                                                                                        CATALOG PDF VERSION

Throughout history, artists have always assumed the role of pioneers, defenders of the new, the unknown. They are often the face of a changing society. Now they are lending a sense of urgency to the message of Ringland.
The independent citizens’ initiative Ringland is working to see Antwerp’s ring road go completely underground. Originally this was an alternative approach to the traffic problems around the city as proposed in the BAM / Oosterweel route. But A City is Not a Road. Ringland has turned out to be a project concerned with the overall quality of life in and around the city. A challenge that Ringland is confronting head on. It’s now or never: the chance of a century for a new, livable Antwerp. Covering the ring road creates a host of opportunities. The stakes are high: a visionary development plan that links the historic city center with surrounding districts rather than separating them; a city that guarantees its inhabitants better air quality and less traffic noise; a city that separates local traffic from international through traffic underground. Covering the ring road creates green, open space: a new mix of residential areas, good traffic circulation, fresh air and opportunities to encourage sports and culture out of doors. Ringland connects.

With the proceeds of the sale, Ringland will develop a dynamic 3D model of its underground concept and fund additional studies by the Ringland academies. All with the goal of raising awareness among policymakers and encouraging them to make a historically important choice for Antwerp and the surrounding region. Will this citizens’ initiative for a visionary urban development project catch on in other cities?
