On this three day show, up to 1500 lots were offered for sale, of which 1050 were sold, making a fine 550000 euros hammer price.
XXth century paintings and drawings
As usual, the sale kicks off with paintings. The second lot, a romantic couple by Florent Willems took a solid 12000 euros. A large canvas very much in the spirit of Hubert Robert (lot 39), sold on the phone to a Paris dealer for 9000 euros.
Other paintings, mainly by Belgian artists, sold within the range of 2500 and 7000 euros. To name but a few: Willem Paerels (lot 278), Albert Saverys (lot 281), Floris Jespers (lot 447), Paul Kuhstohs (lot 86) e.a.
A spelling Georges Mathieu canvas (lot 688A) climbed to 23.000 euros on the phone.
When it came to works on paper, the highest bid on this sale went to a marvellous drawing by the Antwerp artist Eugeen Van Mieghem (lot 1559), marking 9500 euros. A watercolour by Léon Spiliaert (lot 1599) left the room for 4400 euros. Henri Van Straten and his gorgeous watercoloured ladies (lot 1573) was hammered for 4800 euros.
On the print side, two linocuts by the modernist artis Jozef Peeters, drew eager bidders to the room, resulting in 1400 euros for lot 1505, and 1100 euros for lot 1506.But it was the Antwerp artist Sam Dillemans who took the highest bid at the contemporary side with his extremely rare bronze statue (lot 712): 11.000 euro. His two painted portraits sold for 7500 and 7000 euros.
Most worth mentioning in the Art and Antiques sale is the large ‘Famille Verte’ Chinese bowl (lot 232), which took a dealer on the phone to a staggering 22000 euros. A bronze ‘Valkyrie’ statue by Emmanuel Villanis (lot 354) finally sold to a collector in the room for 4800 euros.
