aki is a new young jazz collective from Antwerp.
Under the name ‘aki’, Anke Verslype writes her own music and performs it with various line-ups. In February 2020, aki released their first EP ‘warme dagen’, featuring Willem Heylen (guitar), Ruben Van Cauwenberghe (harmonica) and Jasper De Roeck (bass). In March 2021, a second EP ‘Niobe’ followed as well as a new line-up. This time Anke was accompanied by Marjolein Vernimmen (harp) , Ruben De Maesschalck (bass) and Willem Heylen (guitar).
They also played in this line-up at Jazz Middelheim in September 2020 and were called the surprise of the weekend by Klara. The collective’s first full album will be released in the autumn of 2022. This time the line-up remains the same, but with the addition of Joachim Badenhorst on clarinet.
At the heart of their music are uncomplicated, sober melodies whose boundaries are pushed during improvisation. Together, they create a unique sound that carries you away on a stream of warmth and melancholy.
Aki brings visual jazz that can make you feel incredibly nostalgic and will not leave you unmoved. They leave a middle ground between cinematic landscapes, jazz and minimalism.
