Works on Paper, results

JAMES ENSOR (1860-1949). 'Jeunes filles au bain', ca. 1920-1930. Est.: € 30000 - 35000.

The centerpiece for this ‘works on paper’ auction was the extensive archive of post-war documentation, invitations, artist books, posters from a Ghent collection, with the primary focus on conceptual and minimalist art.

This archive features hundreds of invitations and publications by both national and international artists, including Jan Vercruysse, Guy Mees, Dan Graham, Lawrence Weiner, Carl Andre, Mario Merz, Giovanni Anselmo, Sol LeWitt, Stanley Brouwn, and Richard Long. It also contains exceptional documentation regarding legendary galleries such as Wide White Space, MTL, and Plus Kern, as well as more recent fixtures like Zeno X and Galerie Micheline Szwajcer.

Carefully curated over many years, the collection will be passed on this June to a new generation of collectors invited to follow in the footsteps of this remarkable assemblage.

In addition to this wholesale offering of some 216 lots, the sale includes approximately 450 other lots of prints, drawings, and editions. While there are several old master prints (Piranesi) and turn-of-the-century works by the likes of James Ensor (14 etchings and the drawing Jeunes filles au bain, ca. 1920-1930, from the former Felix Labisse collection), Félicien Rops (including Le Calvaire I), Roger Van Gindertael (a fine gouache, ex-Galerie Georges Giroux), and Léon Spilliaert, the post-war period carries the most weight in the selection.
