Concert
In the spring auction, some 1000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, bibliophile editions and applied arts were presented, of which 80% found a new owner. Below a brief account with hammer prices (excl. buyer’s premium).
The top results from the ‘Modern vs. Classic’ sessions nicely showcase the variety in this spring auction. A Janssonius atlas (lot 2, res.: € 38000), jewelry, (lot 40, a precious table clock, res.: € 15000 and lot 199, an Audermans Piguet Royal Oak Quart gent’s watch, res.: € 16000), as well as romantic paintings all changed hands with ease. A Belle Epoque interior titled ‘Billet de faveur’ by Jean de la Hoese (lot 12) was auctioned at € 17000, while an outdoor scene titled ‘La croisière,’ quite unusual in Fernand Toussaint’s body of work, drew a bid of € 28000 (lot 13). It was one of the windfalls for classical figurative work among 20th-century art on offer. An impressive view of the Norwegian Lofoten by Gunnar Berg (lot 14) realised € 40000, which proved indeed that there are still international buyers for the classical genre. Or, in other words, “They can’t cancel spring.”

However, an equally large appetite was to be observed for works from the 20th century. For instance, a 1936 occasional drawing by James Ensor (lot 17) changed owners for double the estimate (res.: € 18000), a triptych by Ulay & Marina Abramovic (lot 52) was sold for € 15000, and a bid of € 50000 for ‘Je suis légume’ by Thierry de Cordier (lot 51) formed the crowning achievement of this catalog.
From that very same Dutch collection originated the works ‘Four American Artists’ (lot 49, res.: € 8000) and a ‘Voting booth’ by Guillaume Bijl (lot 48, res.: € 6000), by the way.

Originating from one of Belgium’s most prominent private collections (Vanthournout, Izegem), were two Veranneman ‘Osaka’ three seaters (lots 294, 293, res.: € 3500/ 4000), paintings by, i.a., Maxime Van de Woestyne (lot 25, res.: € 8000), and drawings by Antoni Segui (lots 38 and 39, resp. € 10500/ 3200). From different collections, sculptures by Jan Heylen (lot 32, res.: € 6500), Peter Rogiers (lot 384, res.: € 12000), Marcel Arnould (lot 275, res.: € 11000) and Pavlos Dionyssopoulos (lot 296, res.: € 14000) all readily found new homes. Other results among the paintings: Floris Jespers (lot 28, res.: € 7500), Kati Heck (lot 373, res.: € 10000), Jacques Lennep (lot 310, res.: € 7000), Gommaar Gilliams (lot 42, res.: € 9000).
Among the original drawings, decent to excellent results were to be noted for the works of Marthe Wéry (lot 1614, res.: € 5000), Sol Lewitt (lot 1719, res.: € 6000), J.J. Sempé (lot 36, res.: € 3800), Ilse d’Hollander (lot 1714, res.: € 4500), Gideon Kiefer (lot 1836, res.: € 9000) and Paul Delvaux (lot 27, res.: € 8500), as for illustrations by James Ensor (lot 19, res.: € 12500), Panamarenko (lot 1813, res.: € 11000) and Jean-Michel Basquiat (lot 1685, res.: € 7500).
